31 Days of Handmade Christmas Gifts: Day 2 - Capri Sun Zipper Bag

This is a sewing project, but for those of you with limited sewing skills, I assure you that this project is just straight lines and fairly simple and forgiving. 

You will need to have 6 Capri Sun pouches that you have split open on the bottom and washed out and dried.  You will also need a short zipper - 10 inch would work best, but I used and 9 inch, that's what I had on hand.  Also, a sewing machine and thread is needed.  I used white thread for this one, but you could use whatever you like.1.   Sew 3 of the bags side by side together.  I just overlap the left over the right.  I used a decorative stitch to do this.  Repeat this for the other side.

2.   Pin the zipper, right side to the right side of the Capri Suns.  You will have the zipper pull towards the front of the pouches.  Sew down the edge between the edge of the zipper and the zipper, through both the zipper and pouches.  I did this twice, because I found it to be slippery, and wanted to be sure it was attached.  Be cautious when you pass by the zipper pull - it will be hard to sew straight there.

 3.   This is the hard step to explain, but you will flip the zipper over on the side you sewed and put the right side of the other 3 pouches to the right side of the other side of the zipper.

Here's a closer view - you can see that I stitched twice and that this time, I pinned it down, before sewing.

4.   After sewing both sides of the zipper on, I opened the pouch up all the way flat, and sewed a perpendicular line of stitching down both ends of the zipper, so that they lay nice and will also stay.

Oh - wanted to show you that I got this zipper on clearance at Wal-mart for only $.50!  Love it when I can find those kinds of deals, although, in this case, Wal-mart is significantly reducing their stock of zippers, so in the future, I won't like this!

5.   Fold the pouches down so that wrong sides are together and the bottom edges are even.  Sew around all three sides of the pouch except the zipper side.

Done!  You have a nice little bag that you can use for anything small - make-up, pencils, whatever you like!  My cost is really $.50 and my time!  Hope you like this idea for Christmas - you could give it to just about anyone for Christmas - young or old.  You could fill it with markers or crayons for a little one, or you could fill it with anything else that you'd like (or not at all.)  I think I will be giving this to someone that I already made a purse for (I won't mention any names yet!).  You can check that out here.
