Mine Is The Night - Book Review

Mine Is the Night: A Novel
Elizabeth Kerr and her mother-in-law, Marjory Kerr have lost everything, their husbands, their privileged lives, their home, their money, their title, even their clothes to the cause that their husband fought for, causing them all to be marred as traitors of the Crown. They find themselves returning to Marjory's hometown and at the mercy of a distant poor cousin.

Having a pretty good knowledge of the story of Ruth, it was hard to begin this novel and not think that I knew exactly what the outcome would be.  Liz Curtis Higgs wrote this book so well, that I had to keep reading the back of the book, to make sure that it was based on the biblical story, as it seemed like it wouldn't have the happily ever-after ending!

From cover-to-cover, I felt like I couldn't predict what would happen to Elizabeth and Marjory as they toiled through their grief in the loss of their husbands and sons, and a new beginning.  Both women had to start anew with no titles and no jobs.  Their struggles to find their niche in eighteenth-century Scotland as they fell to the lowest caste in society, to the point of not even being hired for fear of associating with them.  As both women are forced to put their pride aside and their faith to work, you can't help but love this descriptive and wonderful novel by Ms. Higgs.

Thanks to Water Brook Multnomah for this book in exchange for this review.
